What to Know About Solo Cruising

Should I Cruise Alone?

Are you someone who values quiet, uninterupted moments to unwind, away from social interactions?  Perhaps you stumbled on a fantastic cruise deal but can't find a companion to join you. Crusing solo is a choice embraced by more individuals.  Here are some things to consider before setting sail on a solo cruise.

Why Cruise Solo?

The actions of cruise lines show that cruising alone is far from uncommon.  Solo cruising is becoming a popular way to travel.  A considerable number of individuals choose and in some cases prefer to embark on a solo cruise.

Coordinating travel plans with another person can be challenging due to work, school and other commitments. If you discover a cruise you're eager to take and find no one available to accompany you, solo cruising might be your only option.

Financial considerations also come in to play.  Solo cruising is generally more cost-effective than you might imagine, though not as cheap as you'd hoped.

Lastly, cruising itself is a unique vacation experience.  While we believe anyone can have a great time at sea, there are individuals who shy away due to concerns like seasickness or an aversion to crowds. Regardless of the motive, cruising solo is a regular occurance.

It takes a Special Personality to Cruise Solo

Solo cruising is distinct from traveling with a companion.  Are you the kind of person who enjoys going to the movies or dining out alone?  For most people, these are not common occurences, but for some, they cherish alone time.

If you already spend a significant amount of time alone, then solo cruising might not be a major adjustment for you.  However, those accustomed to having a travel companion should prepare themselves for the unique experience of being alone for several days in a row.

There are Plenty of Opportunities to Socialize

One of the wonderful aspects of cruising is that everyone on board is there to enjoy their vacation.  In other words, people are generally friendly and in high spirits, making it easy to strike up conversations with fellow passengers and make new acquaintances.

On a recent Virgin Voyage the waitstaff in the restaurants were very good at introducing and seating solo passengers with others so they were not eating alone.  It was a very nice way of meeting other people.

Cruise Lines are Becoming More Solo-Friendly

Several cruise lines now offer cabins designed specifically for solo travelers.  These cabins are smaller, occupying less space and do not charge double occupancy fares, making cruising more affordable for solo adventurers.  Notable examples include NCL and Virgin Voyages.

For instance, NCL announced this year that it was introducing nearly 1,000 new dedicated solo cabins across its entire fleet, including solo balcony cabins, which are a rarity.  Moreover, some NCL ships feature lounges with exclusive access for solo travelers.

Cruise Lines Host Single and Solo Events

If you're keen to meet others, cruise lines often organize gatherings and events especially for solo or single cruisers providing the opportunity to break the ice and connect with like-minded individuals during your journey.

To make it easier for you to initiate conversations, cruise lines include details about the time and location of these events in the ship's daily schedule.  These gatherings usually take place early in the cruise, allowing you to connect with others right from the start.

Saving May Not Be as Significant as You Think

If you're contemplating solo cruising compared to the traditional two-person cabin you might assume that you'd spend half as much.  However the reality is that you'll only receive discounts on certain aspects.  Most of your cruise cost will remain the same.

Most cruise cabins, with the exception of solo cabins, are priced per person, but you'll always be charged for two passengers.  This additional charge is known as the "single supplement."  Some lines do offer a discounted single supplement charge.

Some lines offer solo cabins, howevery the cabin cost is generally higher than the per-person fare for a double-occupancy room.  For example a double-occupancy is priced at $599 pp, the solo may cost $799.  While it's less expensive than paying for two people, it's not half the price.

Where you will save money is in reduced charges for taxes, port fees, gratuities, airfare and excursions, as these are calculated for the single traveler.

Solo Travelers May Earn Double Loyalty Points

In some cases, solo cruisers paying the double occupancy fare for a regular room may receive double loyalty points. Be sure to check you cruise line's program terms.

You're in Charge of Everything

If you cruise solo you are solely responsible for everything.  There's no one to remind you to take your room key when leaving your room, or to ensure you have a watch when heading into a port.

On the positive, you have the freedom to make decision about what you do, where you go, and what you eat without considering anyone else's preferences.

You Can Maximize Your Cruise Experience

If you like to make the most of every moment on vacation, solo cruising could be the ideal choice.  As previously mentioned you control everything.  Instead of waiting on someone else to get ready, finish a meal, or indulge in one more souvenir shop, your time is determined by your preferences.  In port, the ability to move swiftly on your own can be a significant advantage.

In Conclusion

There's no doubt that cruising solo offers a distinctive experience compared to traveling with a partner.  If you've ever contemplated the idea of solo cruising, don't let the prospect of going alone deter you.  It can be a rewarding and liberating adventure, offering a different perspective on the world of cruising.
